 | Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore - Chapel Rock
The Pictured Rocks are made of limestone. They exist today because of the lime/sand stone named the Munising Formation.
This occurrence is also responsible for the large amounts of waterfalls in the central part of the Upper Peninsula. It runs all the way from the Tahquamenon Falls to the Laughing Whitefish Falls.
Shown here is Chapel Rock - what an extraordinary formation.
Cliffs climb over 300ft in some locations along the lakeshore. They are best viewed by boat.
|
 | Why are they called "Pictured" Rocks?
The Pictured Rocks get their name because many of the sandstone formations and walls have been stained red, orange, black, white, and green from traces of minerals.
Shown here is the famous Miner's Castle! A must see on your trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Like a Canvas, the Picture Rocks are nature's masterpieces painted over time. |
